PAII’s first annual "Innkeeping Leadership Week"

Key Leaders Retreat - September 9th and 10th, 2012
Advisory Council Meeting - September 11th and 12th, 2012
Board of Directors Meeting - September 12th and 13th, 2012
Charleston, South Carolina

At the recent Innkeeping Show in Little Rock, there was a consensus among gathered Key Leaders that volunteer and staff leadership at B&B associations around our industry want to have more meaningful gatherings to share ideas and solve problems together. We proposed the idea of a "Key Leaders Retreat" that would be held at a time other than the Innkeeping Show, which unfortunately has become too packed with education over four days to accommodate a full day for this group's needs.

While we know it would be impossible to please all Key Leaders, our recent survey indicated that B&B association leaders would prefer to have the Key Leaders Retreat in conjunction with our first annual "Innkeeping Leadership Week" in Charleston, SC - the week of September 10th. Adjacent to the Retreat will be meetings of the PAII Board of Directors and the PAII Advisory Council. We are thrilled about this great opportunity to bring together the industry's opinion leaders!

Following is the list of topics we plan to discuss at the Key Leaders Retreat:
Standards, definitions and ratings
Should the industry get behind defining the variations of the B&B/inn? We all know that cities, counties, states and provinces will often define and regulate B&Bs as they see fit, and it's not always favorable or friendly to our industry. Would it be useful to have industry-wide definitions as models for government? What about other parties that attempt to define B&Bs or inns for the traveler? Should we have a rating system that indicates the type of B&B or inn based on amenities, offerings or style (i.e. homestay vs. boutique hotel-type)? Even with the prospect of Better Way to Stay, some innkeepers feel we need to provide more direction to travelers on what really is a B&B, what are the different types, etc. Let's have a fruitful discussion on what our industry needs.

Industry Marketing
For Better Way to Stay to be successful in penetrating the consciousness of today's traveler, we need industry-wide support and involvement. We will review and discuss what has been done, what is happening now and plans for the future. And what is the ideal role for all the B&B associations

Advocacy
Most regulatory, legal and market issues involving B&Bs reside at the local level, but there are some macro-issues at play. For instance, the rise of the short-term rental (i.e. vacation rental, spare bedroom, etc) as proliferated by sites like AirBnB and HomeAway. What should be the industry's posture on this rising and evolving element of the lodging industry with regards to tax and regulatory fairness? Are they an ally or competitor - or both? Should PAII and B&B associations get more involved and provide leadership for government entities that seem to be perplexed on how to deal with the vacation rental? What other advocacy issues are critical to our industry now and in the foreseeable future that we all need to rally around?

An Association Leadership Issue To Be Determined
In the coming weeks, we will canvass the allied B&B associations about what association management/leadership issue YOU want to cover, such as volunteer leadership engagement (think - who will be our future leaders?), membership recruitment, strategic planning (what should our goals and objectives be in this changing world?), etc. Stay tuned!
